Expressing God's Love (Ministry)
Ministry is a word that describes something every
Christian should do. The word "minister" comes from a Latin
word meaning servant. A ministry is serving others with the gifts
and abilities God gave to you. Is ministry meant to be a full-time
paid
position? No - that is the exception rather than the rule.
Again, pastors equip people to do the ministry. The people minister;
the pastors
and leaders equip! Our goal is to have hundreds of ministers by
2008. This means we want people who conceive of themselves as ministers.
Ministry Groups
Eastside Vineyard has specialized ministry groups designed to accomplish
specific tasks. We have a developing community outreach group (servant
outreach projects, nursing homes and soup kitchens), a developing pro-life
group, and other task-focused groups. Look for ministry opportunities
at the information table in the lobby.
An Important Distinction: "Ministry" is NOT a small
group
Small group life in Vineyard is designed to give people a context to
be: to be loved; to be known; to be vulnerable; to be taught; and to
be a worshipper. Ministry in Vineyard is designed to enable people
to do good works; to feed the hungry; to visit the lonely; to care
for strangers;
to evangelize the lost; and to love the unloved. Obviously we cannot
totally separate "being" from "doing" (nor do we
want to). But it helps to understand why being in a small group is not
the same thing as doing ministry and why ministry doesn’t meet
our relational needs as human beings.
